Under the aegis of Punjab Agricultural University and ICAR-ATARI, Zone-1, Ludhiana, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Langroya, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar organized two training courses on Solar cooker and solar dryer as a renewable source of energy and improved cultivation techniques for kharif crops on 9.5.2024 at village Mukandpur, block Banga, district Nawanshahr.

During this camp, Assisitant Professor (Home Science) from KVK Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar, Dr. Rajinder Kaur discussed about the importance and use of Solar cooker and solar dryer at domestic level. She said there is abundance of solar energy (free sun energy) in Punjab, while other energies like LPG etc. consume a lot of capital due to daily use. Cooking food in a solar cooker preserves the quality of the food while cooking on LPG gas limits the valuable components of the food. Solar cooker can be used to cook rice, pulses and vegetables in it. Dr. Rajinder said that in the same way, solar dryer also has benefits such as drying items: turmeric, fenugreek, chillies, coriander, garlic and vegetables for making pickles, etc. She further discussed that material in the solar dryer is clean, of better quality and takes less time to dry as compared to open sunlight.

During this training course, Assistant Professor (Agronomy), Dr. Jaswinder Kumar shared important tips on healthy nursery preparation for paddy and basmati. He gave information about water saving, short duration varieties of paddy, their improved cultivation techniques, fertilizer and weed management.

Associate Director (Training), Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Langroya, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar, Dr. Maninder Singh Bons urged the farmers not to burn wheat residue. He also sensitized the farmers and farmwomen about upcoming admissions of different constituent colleges of PAU, Ludhiana. Apart from this, they were encouraged to conduct soil testing of their fields to ensure proper use of fertilizers.

In the end, Ex-Sarpanch, village Mukandpur, Sh. Malkit Singh thanked the experts and farmers /farmwomen for participating in this programme.
